American Cocker Spaniel
Sires | Dams | Puppies Available
Like all spaniels, the American Cocker Spaniel is descended from Spanish hunting dogs, which are also the forebears of setters and the larger modern spaniels. The American Cocker Spaniel is the smallest of the sporting breeds. Over the years, though, the dog's looks have acquired much more importance than its hunting talents.
American Cocker Spaniels were bred more and more for the show bench, with little or no attention paid to their intelligence. Breeders vied with each other trying to produce glamorously feathered champions. The breed became hugely popular, but its days of working in the fields and forests were over. This is what typically happens when a breed catches on and becomes fashionable. Luckily, the American Cocker Spaniel's outstanding qualities of character have survived in some lines despite the emphasis on beautiful appearance.
The Cocker is an even-tempered, friendly, and loving dog of great charm. It gets along well with children and always tries to please its master. Its most striking physical characteristic is its thick, luxurious coat, which has to be taken care of conscientiously.
One important thing to keep in mind is that the American Cocker Spaniel makes highly efficient use of the food it eats. That is why you have to watch how much it eats and not give in to it, no matter how irresistibly its beautiful eyes look up at you at the dinner table. We at Specialty Kennels breed for beauty and brains trying to produce top quality Cockers for pet and show.
